The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), also recognized as, Bluetooth Smart is a wireless technology based on the Bluetooth standard that consumes lesser power and be produced at a lower cost compared to the latter. It uses the same 2.4 GHz radio frequencies as Classic Bluetooth, which allows dual-mode devices to share a single radio antenna.
The BMD-200 from Rigado is a module for Bluetooth 4.1 LE based on the nRF51822 SoC from Nordic Semiconductor. The device has an ARM Cortex M0 CPU, embedded transceiver, and an on-module chip antenna that provides a complete RF solution. The module also has an evaluation board for the user to evaluate the product integrating it into some on-board sensors, which can be interfaced directly to a computer through the micro USB port. The on-board sensors included in the evaluation board are the accelerometer and ambient light sensor. The board also includes user-buttons, which are all active low and a current sensing header that allows power consumption measurement for the BMD-200. The evaluation board can powered through either the micro USB header or the coin cell battery.
Breakout headers are provided in the board to allow easy access to all of the BMD-200 GPIO pins. With this, the user can have additional circuits to expand his chosen application. The BMD-200 is fully compatible to develop application such as iBeacons, low-power sensors and connected appliances.
