The BTN8982TA is a half bridge DC motor controller. It is composed of a driver, a p-channel high-side MOSFET, and an n-channel low-side MOSFET. The built-in driver makes the device easy to be interfaced with a microcontroller. It features logic level inputs, slew rate adjustment, diagnosis with current sense, dead time generation, over-temperature protection, under-voltage protection, overcurrent protection and short circuit protection. The BTN8982TA can be combined with other BTN8982TA to form H-bridge and 3-phase drive configurations.
This DC motor controller reference design consists of two BTN8982TA devices. The combination of 2 half-bridge BTN8982TA motor drivers forms an H-bridge that allows the circuit to control a bidirectional DC motor. Though the circuit is configured to control a bidirectional DC motor, it can still control 2 unidirectional DC motors by connecting the motor between BTN8982TA output and ground. To control a bidirectional DC motor, connect the motor to J3 and J4 binding posts. Apply a HIGH signal to both INH pin of U1 and U2 to activate the high-side and low-side MOSFETs of the two BTN8982TA devices. To rotate the motor in forward or reverse direction, one of the two BTN8982TA IN pin must be pulled to LOW and the other IN pin must be applied with a PWM signal.
This BTN8982TA DC Motor Controller can be interfaced with Arduino Uno development board that utilizes the ATmega328P-PU microcontroller. The normal operating voltage of the whole circuit ranges from 8 to 18V. It can control DC motors that consume current up to 30A (capped due to PCB limitations). This controller can be used in applications that uses DC motors like ventilation, spinning machine, driller, vacuum cleaner, shapers, etc., not exceeding 250W power.
