Summary

This reference design is a Controller Area Network (CAN) Bus Analyzer tool that is used to analyze and debug high speed CAN network. The toolkit comes with all the hardware and software required to connect a CAN network to a PC. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) makes it easy to quickly observe and interpret bus traffic. Aside from being an easy-to-use tool, it is also a low-cost CAN Bus monitor. The CAN BUS Analyzer offers expected functionality such as trace, transmit, trace filter and log file capability, but also adds unique features such as ECAN register view and group CAN message transmit. All these features make this a very versatile tool for fast, simple debugging in any high-speed CAN network.


This device can be powered by a 9-24V power supply when operating without the PC and when updating firmware in the USB PIC MCU. It can also be powered using the USB port. This tool supports CAN 2.0b and ISO11898-2 and can be connected to a CAN network using the DB9 connector or screw terminal connection. This CAN Bus analyzer is connected to the PC via the USB connector. On the other hand, the tool can be connected to the CAN network using the DB9 connector or the screw terminals. This design utilizes PIC18F2550 microcontroller, which is ideal for for low power and connectivity applications that benefit from the availability of three serial ports: FS-USB (12 Mbit/s), I2C and SP (up to 10Mbit/s) and an asynchronous (LIN capable) serial port (EUSART). Along with the PIC18F2550 microcontroller, it also uses PIC18F2680 microcontroller, which are enhanced flash microcontrollers. This type of microcontroller utilizes ECAN technology and nanoWatt technology.
