Summary

The 4026 IC is a 16-pin CMOS seven-segment counter from the 4000 series. It counts clock pulses and returns the output in a form which can be displayed on aseven-segment display. This avoids using a binary-coded decimal to seven-segment decoder, but it can only be used to display the (decimal) digits 0-9.

Very bad design. The 120R will alter the brightness of the display as more segments are illuminated. Some 4026's have current limiting.

The Design is very good for two digits. If you add more led displays then add a 120 ohm resister per display

Using too small current limiting resistor will allow too much current to flow in the LED segments in the display, resulting in their rather sudden destruction. So 120ohm resistor is a good choice.

Here is a link to another similar project, that enables multiple digits and only needs easily and cheaply available components http://www.fadstoobsessions.com/Electronics-Projects/DIY-Tools/Digital-Counter.php
