This reference design is a stepper motor driver carrier board that uses DRV8825 motor driver of Texas Instruments. This design features overcurrent and overtemperature protection with an adjustable current limiting and six microstep resolutions that is intended to drive a bipolar stepper motor. The motor driver is capable of driving up to 2.5 A of current from each output with proper heatsinking at 24V and 25°C.
This microstepping bipolar stepper motor driver features operates from 8.2 V to 45 V and can deliver up to approximately 1.5 A per phase without a heatsink or forced air flow which is also rated for up to 2.2 A per coil with sufficient additional cooling. The driver has a pinout and interface that are nearly identical to those of A4988 stepper motor driver carriers, so it can be used as a higher-performance drop in replacement for those boards in many applications. It has an intelligent chopping control that automatically selects the correct current decay mode. The DRV8825 supports three different decay modes: slow decay, fast decay, and mixed decay. The current through the motor windings is regulated using a fixed-frequency PWM scheme. This means that after any drive phase, when a motor winding current has hit the current chopping threshold (ITRIP), the DRV8825 will place the winding in one of the three decay modes until the PWM cycle has expired. Afterward, a new drive phase starts.It also has built in regulator and can directly interface with 3.3V and 5V systems. Moreover, the output driver block consists of N-channel power MOSFET’s configured as full H-bridges to drive the motor windings. A low-power sleep mode is also included which allows the system to save power when not driving the motor.
This board is commonly integrated in various applications such as money handling machines, video security cameras, printers and scanners . It can also be used in office or factory automations, gaming machines as well as in robotics.
