Buck converter is a DC to DC electronic converter in which the voltage output will be converted to a level which is much lesser than the input. It is also called as a step down converter. The name itself is analogous to a step down transformer where the input voltage is reduced.


In this design, the buck converter consists of the switching transistor, the PWM control and the flywheel circuit (D1, C1, and L1).The NPN transistor in this circuit acts as a switch. The converter operates in two states the ON and OFF. When it is on its ON state, the current flows through the load via the flywheel circuit. There will be a large positive voltage in the D1 cathode causing the diode to be reversed biased and therefore, plays no part in the operation while the inductor stores energy in the form of magnetic field. Due to the increasing of stored energy, the inductor L1 prevents the transistor to produce current making it OFF state thus causing a voltage drop. Now the inductor becomes the voltage source and the stored energy supports the current flow through the load.


Buck converters are typically used for notebook batteries, advanced telecom and datacom systems, voltage regulator converter for high digital ICs in graphics cards, netbook, desktop and notebook PC.
