Power is one of the key parameters in many designs in electronics. One of this is the buck converter; they are used to convert DC input voltage to a lower DC voltage. It steps down voltage while stepping up current from its input supply. The buck converter compared to linear regulators provides much greater power efficiency. The design is a LMR23625 buck regulator’s typical application design. The LMR23625 is a synchronous step down regulator. It operates at an input range from 4.5 to 36V and a 2.5A continuous output current.
The LMR23625 is supplied by a 12V supply and regulates an output of 5V 2.5A voltage. The jumper J1 is used to enable the switch-mode converter. The default system Undervoltage-Lockout (UVLO) is 6.2V. This is done by connecting a jumper in pin 1 and pin 2. The jumper J2 is used to synchronize the switching frequency to external clock. The design is set to have a 5V-regulated output but this can be changed from 5V to 3.3V by an open J3 connection.
The LMR23625 buck regulator is suitable for various applications such as industrial, automotive, telecom and general purpose for power regulation from unregulated power source. Buck converters are highly efficient type of step down converters that reduces heat and extends battery life of portable devices. They are also useful when electrical isolation is not needed between the switching circuits.
