Short message service (SMS) has been a popular technology for quite some time now. Since then, it has been a convenient way of transmitting messages to and from mobile devices. In SMS, the message (text only) from the sending mobile is stored in a central short message center (SMS), which then forwards it to the destination mobile. This means that in the case that the recipient is not available, the short message is stored and can be sent later. Since SMS used signalling channel as opposed to dedicated channels, these messages can be sent/received simultaneously with the voice/data/fax service over a GSM network.
This reference design is an SMS based polling system. It operates when a user sends a particular message indicating his/her vote. The message is then received by the GSM module, which in turn sends the data to the microcontroller (ATMEGA32A). The main controller, which is the ATMEGA32A, is connected to a 16x2 LCD module. The LCD module displays the results of the poll. The results are stored in the internal EEPROM of the ATMEGA32A so they are not lost during power failures. There is an indicated message format for the poll to be read. Upon casting a poll, a user will receive a message indicating the success or failure of his vote.
This design is intended for an SMS polling system. However, it can be modified to function as desired by the user. This can also be modified as a switching system and many other applications that utilize a GSM module.
