Summary

The design is a fully functional 3-Phase Energy Meter . It is part of digitalization of electric metering which comprised of the main board and the USB communications module. As part of the technology, various ideas comes out and make some improvements of the technology. One of the ideas is the concept of prepaid electricity which is now available in the market. With prepaid electricity billing, the consumers are given a chance to choose electricity consumption within a span of time through a purchase of amount of energy prior to consumption.

The design of the main board contains the analog circuitry and the PIC18F2520 device that functions as the main RMS engine. The schematic design focuses on the main board where it contains a lot of components. The meter contains serially accessible registers and is intended to be flexible and upgraded to a variety of PIC® micro-based energy meter designs using the firmware presented herein. The “3-Phase Energy Meter USB software” offers a functional and simple means to monitor and control the PIC18F2520 via USB through the PIC18F4550 under communications module. In addition, the RS-232 interface of the PIC18F2520 can be used to create custom calibration setups. The energy meter software offers an automated step by step calibration process that can be used to quickly calibrate energy meters. The MCP3909-I/SS device is a energy metering IC designed with SPI interface and Active Power Pulse Output. The MCP23S18T-E/SO device is a 16-Bit I/O expander with Open-Drain Outputs that support the microcontroller. The 74HCT7046 device is Phase-locked-loop with lock detector that generates an output signal whose phase is related to the phase of an input signal. The ADUM1201CRZ-RL7 device is a dual channel digital isolators that eliminates the need for external drivers and other discrete components. The 24FC256-I/SM device is a 2K x 8 (256 Kbit) Serial Electrically Erasable PROM, capable of operation across a broad voltage range (1.7V to 5.5V). The FSA3357 device is a high performance, single-pole/triple-throw (SP3T) Analog Switch or 3:1 Multiplexer/Demultiplexer. The transformer and attenuator circuitry are components used to control input signal of the main board. The DCP010505BP device is a family of 1W, unregulated, isolated DC/DC converters that synchronized switching frequencies and the LM1117-5.0 device is a series of low dropout voltage regulators with a dropout of 1.2V at 800mA of load current which regulates voltage and offers a current limiting and thermal shutdown.

The design is excellent which energy management can be improved. It is perfect to reduce energy consumption of the consumer. It can be improved for more sophisticate application with safety measures.
