This reference design utilizes the MAX7044 from Maxim Integrated. This IC is a crystal-referenced, Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) VHF/UHF transmitter, which is a highly integrated OOK/ASK transmitter that operates in the frequency range of 300MHz to 450MHz. This supports data rates up to 100kbps, and provides output power up to +13dBm. The crystal-based architecture of the MAX7044 modulation depth, faster frequency settling, higher tolerance of the transmit frequency, and reduced temperature dependence.

This design is powered by an external power supply or by the 3V coin-cell battery. The passive components in this design are optimized to operate at 433.92MHz. Furthermore, this design enables testing the MAX7044’s RF performance and requires no additional support circuitry. The RF output uses a 50Ω-matching network and an SMA connector for convenient connection to test equipment. Also, a reverse polarity SMA connector is also included to connect to a ¼-wave whip antenna. This board can directly interface to the user’s embedded design for easy encoding. A simple, single-data interface and a buffered clock-out signal at 1/16th the crystal frequency makes the MAX7044 compatible with most microcontrollers or code-hopping generators.

This design is useful in RF communication such as remote keyless entry and RF remote controls. It can also be used as a transmitter in security systems, wireless game consoles, wireless computer peripherals, and wireless sensors.
