The reference design as shown is a PIC32MX1/2/5 Starter Kit from Microchip Technology. This includes the PIC32MX1/2/5 Starter Kit development board, a standard A-to-B mini-USB cable for the debugger, a standard type A and micro-B USB connectors, MCP2562 CAN bus Transceivers, a CiA DS102 compliant DB9 interface to the CAN transceiver, three user-programmable LEDs, and three push button switches.

The PIC32MX1/2/5 Starter Kit has the following hardware features: MCP2562 CAN transceiver, DB9 connector, processor support, USB connectivity, starter kit powering and switches. The MCP2562 CAN transceiver takes a split differential signal part, and converts that signal into a single-ended set of signals (receive and transmit). The DB9 connector is an interface to the CAN transceiver and is compliant with CiA DS 102. This connector provides access to the following signals: CANH, CANL, GND, and a voltage input. The development board in the starter kit is designed with a permanently mounted (i.e., soldered) PIC32MX570F512L microcontroller.

There are two ways to power the starter kit. Firstly, it can be powered by connecting USB bus power to the USB debug connector (J3). Secondly, it can be done by applying 6-24V DC power to pin 9 of the DB-9 connector (J6). On the other hand, the USB connectivity feature of this device has three modes; host mode, device mode and debugging mode. To operate in host mode, connect the device to the Type-A connector, port J5. To switch into device mode, connect the board to the host through port J4. The starter kit includes a PIC24FJ256GB106 USB microcontroller for debugging over USB. This can be achieved by connecting the starter kit to port J3. This kit provides a low-cost method for the development and testing of CAN bus applications with PIC32MX5XX devices.
