This project uses SST89E58RDA-40-C-PIE microcontroller that facilitates automatic wireless identification using electronic passive and active tags with suitable readers. In this design, an attempt is made to solve recurrent lecture attendance monitoring problem in developing countries using RFID technology.
The microcontroller is the heart of the system. We have used SST89E58RDA-40-C-PIE from Microchip Technology, which is pin-for-pin compatible with standard 8051 microcontroller devices. Its split-gate cell design and thick-oxide tunneling injector offer significant cost and reliability benefits. The oscillator circuit is constructed between XTAL2 and XTAL1 pins of the microcontroller. It includes an oscillator and two capacitors of 33pF. The RST pin is configured as the reset pin that includes a switch, a 10uF capacitor and a 56kΩ resistor. When the switch is pressed, RST pin gets connected to VCC and the SST89E58RDA-40-C-PIE gets reset. A 16x2 LCD is used for writing and displaying data on it. Whenever a person enters, data from the real time clock is fetched and stored on the microcontroller. When the person leaves the room, again data is fetched. In order for the microcontroller and computer to work on different logic levels, MAX232 IC is used to have communication between the two. This IC brings RS-232 level to TTL level or TTL level to RS-232 level accordingly.
In recent years, there have been rise in the number of applications based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems and have been successfully applied to different areas as diverse as transportation, health-care, agriculture, and hospitality industry to name a few. The application of RFID to student attendance monitoring as developed and deployed in this study is capable of eliminating time wasted during manual collection of attendance and an opportunity for the educational administrators to capture face-to-face classroom statistics for allocation of appropriate attendance scores and for further managerial decisions.
