Summary

This is a simple circuit for checking RJ-45 LAN Cable, either a straight through or a crossover cable. It uses a 555 timer and a decade counter (4017) which produces a pulse successively. Only one output can be high at any time.

In using the cable tester, connect the end (male connector) of the cable to the female connecter (A), also, connect the other end (male connector) of the cable to the female connector (B). Them, apply pulses by turning on. For a straight through cable, the LEDs will glow successively. If not, a wire inside the cable might be broken. For a crossover, the LEDs will glow in 1,2,7,4,5,8,3,6 order. If not, again, the wire inside the cable might be broken.
