SD Card to Embedded System Components Interface

This circuit design is an interface between SD card and other electronic devices through a microcontroller. It serves as a complete guide for data handling application. The SD card is excellent option to have an additional memory that is an important factor in building embedded projects.

The In-System Programming (ISP) connector is used to load the codes into the microcontroller. The SD card serves as an external memory of the system and it is used for data logging. The NVT2003DP is a bidirectional voltage-level translator that protects SD cards from overvoltage. The PCF8593P is a real-time clock IC that is used as a clock and calendar in data logging. The P89V51RD2 device is a microcontroller that has X2 mode option, in which it can run with six clocks per machine cycle that achieve twice the throughput with the same clock frequency. It also manages the communication of SD card with the entire system. The MAX232 is a dual driver/receiver IC that includes a capacitive voltage generator to supply voltage levels from a single 5V supply. It also used for the communication between the ICs and CPU. The RS232 port is used to communicate with personal computer through HyperTerminal and other terminal programs. The pins with pull up resistors are for the current stability during the operation of ICs.

The design is excellent for further development of embedded systems. It extends the limitation of Microcontrollers in terms of memory. It can also improve the features of embedded projects that make the project more useful.
