This solid-state detector is excellent for detecting gamma and x-rays. The design is simple which uses photodiode and some amplifiers in order to detect radiation. It is a more practical design compared to the highly developed detectors of radiation.

The PIC18F4550-I/P is an 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) that generates instructions to the slave devices and other discrete components. The LMP7721 is a low-input bias current precision amplifier that is best suited for photodiode output amplification. The LMV358 is a low-voltage rail-to-rail amplifier that further amplifies the output of LMP7721 before it will be feed to the MCU. The MCP1804T-3002I/DB is a low dropout voltage regulator that can deliver up to 150mA of current while consuming only 50uA of quiescent current. The buzzer is used for sound indication.

The design is suitable for measuring gamma radiations. It is also suitable for medical applications where the detector is used in different ways such as to kill cancer cells, to sterilize medical equipment and in radioactive tracers.
