The USB devices as well as HDMI connectors are hot insertion and removal system. Because of this fact, these devices are prone to Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). However, USB ESD protection is not yet a specific requirement of the USB specification. State-of-the-art USB ICs are manufactured on high integration CMOS processes making them extremely sensitive to damage from the high static voltages associated with an ESD event. Due to this fact, an ESD protection is recommended in USB and HDMI devices.

This reference design is an ESD protection using a TVS diode. This design particularly uses Texas Instruments’ TPD4E02B04. The TPD4E02B04 is a bidirectional TVS ESD protection diode array for USB Type-C and HDMI 2.0 circuit protection. The TPD4E02B04 is rated to dissipate ESD strikes at the maximum level specified in the IEC 61000-4-2 international standard (Level 4). This design contains 5 TPD4E02B04DQA protection diodes. One of these is configured with two end-launch SMA connectors (J9 & J10) for capturing eye diagrams through an HDMI type A. Two TPD4E02B04DQA’s are configured for IEC61000-4-2 compliance testing, with one those being setup to allow the capture of a clamping waveform during an ESD event. One TPD4E02B04DQA is configured for 4-port s-parameter analysis. One TPD4E02B04DQA is configured to pass-through USB 3.1 using one USB 3.1 Type A and one USB 3.1 Type B connector.

This design is very useful to protect against ESD in applications such as DVI, LVDS, Gigabit Ethernet, audio headphones, microphone ports, speaker ports, SDIO and SIM. System-level electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection is very important in today’s world, not only in the industrial space, but also in the consumer space as devices become portable, haptic and widely used.
